Burg Geotop

36355 Grebenhain(602 m über NN)

Like a secure and massive fortress, the Burg rock formation protrudes from the plateau above the Schwarzbach Valley. Blocky debris of basalt rock and loess cover the plateau around the natural monument. The oval formation has a size of about 20 m wide and 70 m long. They are not basalt columns, but steeply standing fissures, which are arranged in a complex way. The castle is probably the remains of a volcanic eruption. The fine-grained rock has inclusions of olivine and clinopyroxene, in the groundmass there are many plagioclase. The castle is located only a few meters south of the castle aisle and can be reached from Grebenhain or Hoherodskopf via the Brüder-Grimm-Weg and the VHC-Weg marked with a white circle. Not far from the castle runs the Vogelsberg Volcanic Ring (www.vulkanring-vogelsberg.de) and the \‘Geopfad\‘. The nature park guide Manfred Meinhardt leads his tour through the ‘Sagenhafte Schwarzbachtal‘ also past this formation.
