Geiselstein Geotop

63679 Schotten(711 m über NN)

Once here, you will find yourself at the "North Pole of the Vogelsberg". However, this has less to do with the temperature than with the extraordinary property of the volcanic rock. This volcanic vent offers a special feature: the basanite has such a high magnetite content that the compass needle is deflected. The Geiselstein is also impressive because of its size: 20 m high and about 50 m wide, this rocky cliff stands out strikingly from its surroundings. Geology: The platy fracturing is a striking feature of the rock, which presents itself as a fine-grained porphyritic structure. The inclusions consist of olivine, clinopyroxene, minor plagioclase and nepheline, but also biotite, leucite and sodalite. Accessibility: Hikers can reach the Geiselstein by a detour on the Höhenrundweg or directly from the parking lot Heide at the L 3291 in a few minutes. at the Hoherodskopf in Schotten-Breungeshain
