The summit of Hinterkippel reaches 469 m. On its western edge there is a quarry 100 m in diameter, which is no longer in operation. Surrounded by a small forest, a basanite was mined here, which contains a conspicuous number of olivine nodules. The rock is of a dense fine-grained groundmass. It has a dark color and is compact. Ore and plagioclase occur in the matrix only in small quantities.
Hinterkippel can be reached from Freiensteinau-Holzmühl (on the L 3178) via field paths uphill in the direction of the grove.
