Steinbruch Nieder-Ofleiden Geotop

Am Steinbruch 1, 35315 Homberg (Ohm)(260 m über NN)

The largest basalt quarry in Central Europe is located in Nieder-Ofleiden, a district of Homberg/Ohm. Two huge quarrying areas are connected by a tunnel. The large processing plant is located at the foot of the mountain, where mainly columnar basalts are quarried, most of which are steep. Rarely, platy segregation is observed. The dense, dark grayish-black basalt (tholeiitic basalt and alkali basalt) is holocrystalline and of fine grain size. Olivine, ore, plagioclase and clinopyroxene inclusions can be found, and a diatreme breccia and lake sediments are visible next to a lava lake identified by geologists. The quarry is still in operation and not freely accessible. However, at the northern and eastern upper edge of the quarry area a view is possible. To do so, it is best to walk up the mountain road from Nieder-Ofleiden, turn right at its end into the road Am Steinbruch and then immediately keep left again and follow the field path.
