Germany can count around 30,000 native insect species. They are an indispensable part of the ecosystem: not only as pollinators of fruit trees and many flowering plants, they make an invaluable contribution to food production and the survival of valuable biotopes. They are part of the food chain and ensure the survival of numerous bird, reptile, or amphibian species. "Insect diversity and native biodiversity are thus inextricably linked. It is an important task to preserve this diversity and to support measures in the Vogelsberg District," says Dr. Jens Mischak, responsible department head and first district councillor.

Several municipalities in the Vogelsberg District have already been making efforts to implement insect protection for years. In order to support this commitment, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Vogelsberg District has announced a cross-district insect protection project for the first time, in which 13 towns and communities are participating as project partners. Alsfeld, Feldatal, Gemuenden (Felda), Grebenhain, Herbstein, Homberg (Ohm), Kirtorf, Lautertal, Muecke, Schlitz, Schotten, Schwalmtal and Wartenberg participate in the actions. The project is supported by the Regional Council of Giessen from funds for the implementation of the biodiversity strategy in Hesse.

Seed bags are now available for citizens to pick up in these cities and towns (while supplies last):

  • Feldatal - at the town hall during opening hours and at Blumenhaus Schermer, Gross-Felda as well as "Christiane's Blueten Reich, Floristik und mehr" in Ermenrod
  • Gemuenden (Felda) - in the town hall - during the usual opening hours
  • Herbstein - in the town hall - always on Thursdays during the usual opening hours
  • Kirtorf - in the citizen's office - during the usual opening hours

  • Schwalmtal - municipal administration - during normal opening hours

Those interested are asked to pay attention to the specifications of the city and municipal administrations for the possible appointment arrangements.
