Our geostation, the Kunstturm (Art Tower) - a former ore loading plant with loading tower, has been honored as a place of industrial culture by the project "Industriekultur Mittelhessen".
28 places and objects of industrial historical interest in LEADER regions in Central Hesse, which also include the Vogelsberg, are gradually being presented and advertised to the (press) public. The main characteristic of the Central Hesse region is the early industrialization due to the wealth of mineral resources. The sites of industrial culture tell stories and have a high significance for the region. In the new app "Industrial Culture Central Hesse", which acts as a networking module, information on all 28 awarded objects and places can be accessed.
Ore was and is an important topic for the region around Muecke. Ore mining created jobs, new structures were formed over decades, and later remodeled and reworked. Today you can find, among other things, hidden ponds, buried tunnels and former railroad lines that tell of the once important ore industry.
The art tower near Muecke (Nieder-Ohmen), combines ore and culture - in 2009 the loading tower became a 3x6 meter exhibition space. Temporary ERZART art walks and symposia are offered. In addition, there are changing (photo) exhibitions and installation of contemporary art and industrial history. The whole is complemented by artistic, cultural and regional historical performances, readings, lectures as well as events from Germany and Europe.
The continuous examination of the site and its history consistently give rise to new ideas and thoughts that reward the Kunstturm (Art Tower) with supraregional recognition. In the annex one can find thematic exhibitions on the history and technology of ore mining in the region. This history can be explored on three themed hiking trails - the Southern and Central Ore Trails as well as the soon to be completed Northern Ore Trail.
