Journey to Germany's most beautiful geosites

Let's get started in Rhineland-Palatinate.

30 Geotopes³

The German Geological Society (DGGV) is 175 years old! On the occasion of the anniversary, the project 30 Geotopes³ was launched. Geological outcrops are recorded and presented with the most modern methods, thus a connection between classical and modern geology is established.

The windows into Earth's history are displayed with the help of digital and three-dimensional images - cameras including drones and 360-degree cameras, 3D models, laser scanners and d-GPS.

All data on the website is freely accessible, geological features of the geotope, possible historical use and the history of its formation are also explained.

The collaborative project brings together geoscientific institutions such as geoparks, state geological offices, and universities across sites.

Every month a new geotope is presented on the newly created project page -  www.digitalgeology.de.

The latest 3D model and geotope of the month February is "The Devil's Table" of Hinterweidenthal in the Palatinate Forest, a 14-meter-high mushroom rock consisting of sandstone, which was formed by different geological processes. According to a legend, however, the devil set up a dining table here; a poem excerpt by Johann Martin Jaeger alias "Fritz Claus (1853-1923) describes the action (no official translation available):

Da – wie mit Blitzesschnelle
Packt jetzt zwei Felsen frisch
Der grimmige Geselle
Und stellt sie auf als Tisch.

Nachdem er dran gegessen,
Ging durch die Nacht er fort.
Den Tisch, wo er gesessen,
Den ließ er einfach dort.
